There are so many options for both that it can be easy to be drawn by particular colours and patterns without maintaining a balance. And while contrast is good, there has to be harmony between your walls and floors to create that coordinated look.
Consider what feel, or theme you’re going for – contemporary, luxury, cosy, ultra-stylish, warm and welcoming. Once you know the purpose of the room, let that help you tie the two together and direct your choices.
By playing with the brightness of the walls and floors you can alter its appearance completely.
Light walls and floors may make your room seem larger and clean. Whereas dark floors and light floors will help create a wider feel. A light floor and light rear wall can make your room appear narrower.
You may have always wanted dark flooring, but it can create an enclosed look in small rooms so referring back to your ‘feel’ will help you make the right choices.

And you don’t have to let the walls do all the talking. Allow your floors to be centre stage by choosing a subtle colour for your paint or wallpaper, and a striking patterned tile or a boldly painted floor.
You many choose to mute the walls and the floor for a blank canvas, leaving your striking sofa or your window dressings to become the talking point.
The smallest of touches can help draw the room together. If you’re tiling your floor, why not choose a grout colour similar to your feature wall, to create harmony and balance? Add accents of texture, or reflective surfaces through walls and floors. And choose accessories that tie the both together.
