North Co Dublin Water Supply Hit by E.coli

2007-08-14

Residents in North Co Dublin, the Knocksedan Estate been warned to boil drinking water after the discovery of the bacteria in the system.

E 100 E. coli

How does E. coli get into your drinking water?

E.
coli comes from human and animal wastes. During a break in the water mains or an open hydrant these are the weak points in the system. When these breaches happen E. coli may enter the water supply and cause infection. When this water is used as sources of drinking water and the water is not treated or inadequately treated, E. coli may end up in your drinking water.

E. coli is a common type of bacteria that can get into food, like beef and vegetables. E. coli is short for the medical term Escherichia coli. The strange thing about these bacteria, and lots of other bacteria is that they're not always harmful to you.

E. coli normally lives inside your intestines, where it helps your body break down and digest the food you eat. Unfortunately, certain types (called strains) of E. coli can get from the intestines into the blood. This is a rare illness, but it can cause a very serious infection.

Someone who has E. coli infection may have these symptoms:
• fever and chills
• bad stomach cramps and belly pain
• vomiting
• diarrhea, sometimes with blood in it
