Painting Old Door |
To prepare an interior door for painting the first thing to do is to remove the handles, plates and locks this will make the painting job far easier.

Now start checking for any flaking paint, remove same with a paint scraper. Then using a fine sandpaper rub the surrounding paint area to help even the surface. Using fillers now fill all open joints or cracks always leaving the filler slightly proud and again rubbing down with fine sandpaper.
Now rub the entire door down with fine sandpaper especially if it has a gloss finish. Then wash the entire door down with sugar soap or similar solutions now allow drying.
If the paintwork is in sound condition then you may not need to prime or undercoat the door especially if the colour is remaining the same. But it is advisable to sand down the existing paintwork and apply a thin undercoat, for a professional finish.
Applying the Undercoat
First choose a suitable undercoat for the top coat, preferably from the same paint manufacturer.
Now apply an even coat using smooth wrist actions following the grain of the wood ensuring to catch any runs as you work.
If the door requires two undercoats the wait until the first coat is dry. Then rub down with fine sand paper, now wipe the entire door down with a clean cloth to remove any dust. Now apply the second coat in the same way as the first coat.
