Loose Floor Tiles |
When tiles start coming loose from a wooden suspended floor at one time, there are usually only two possible reasons. Either the adhesive holding the tiles to the floor has failed, or the floor itself is moving or flexing. The first thing you must do is to determine the cause of your loose tiles.
Check sub-floor
If most of the loose tiles are in a high foot traffic area, check the sub-floor, to see how thick it is. Tile needs to be set on a sub-floor that is no less than ½ “inch thick for proper support. If you suspected that the plywood underneath the tiles is not thick enough, then the only way to check to make sure is to use a power tool to cut a small section of the floor and inspect same.
Remove Loose Tiles Start by removing all loose tiles by carefully prying them up with a putty knife or trowel. Another way to remove cracked tiles is to drill some holes with a masonry drill bit. Where possible, try to re-use as many of the loose tiles as possible. If you are lucky you may have a leftover supply of tiles or may be able to purchase more of the same type.
Re-fit Tiles Now start to re-fit all missing tiles press down firmly to make good contact with the floor adhesive. Leave tiles to set and the re-grout all freshly laid tiles.
