DO YOU NEED A SOFTENER?
If some parts of Ireland the water can be hard or soft depending on the area.
TYPES OF HARD WATER
Hard water can either be 'temporary' or 'permanent'.
Temporary hardness can be removed by boiling the water.
This causes scale to be deposited which furs up kettles and hot water systems.
Permanent hardness can't be removed by heating.
It doesn't affect hot water systems but the other effects remain.
TIP: PREVENT SCALE
Scale builds up when the water temperature exceeds 60 degrees C, so in hard water areas turn boiler thermostats down to this level.
In soft water areas it can be set at 70 degrees C.
Convert a direct to an indirect hot water system.
Add chemical softeners to the water to prevent scale building up.
HOW A SOFTENER WORKS
The softener has to be connected into the rising main.
Water is passed through resin where the chemicals which cause hardness - calcium and magnesium bicarbonates, sulphates and chlorides - are exchanged for sodium salts.
