How do I know if my system is treated?Most reputable water treatment manufacturers supply a self-adhesive sticker in with their products.
This sticker would normally be completed and dated by the installer and placed in a prominent position, such as by the boiler or feed and expansion tank.
However, this is no guarantee that any treatment is actually present or that the system remains dosed to the manufacturers recommended strength, simply because heating systems do tend to get drained from time to time for system repairs etc., thus diluting any previous treatment.
Most manufacturers supply simple chemical analysis kits for testing 'in-use' product concentration, however as different manufacturers use different trace constituents for test purposes, these kits are only suitable if the product manufacturer is known from the outset. Most offer a more comprehensive laboratory report.
However, a simple but effective test is to take a small sample of system water into a clean jar, add a few steel (not galvanised) nails, and leave in a warm place (e.g. on top of a working radiator) for about two weeks.
If the system is untreated, or if any previous treatment has become over-diluted, the nails should begin to show signs of rusting.
This will at least provide an indication of the corrosiveness of the water in the system.
