Guide
This is a step by step guide that will avoid you hours of frustration.
Sketch
Before taking a trip down to the local DIY outlet to buy all the latest animated Xmas displays complete with fiber optic lighting. Stop now and start by making a sketch first thing to do is to measure the area that you plan to decorate. Take a good look at your front or back garden and decide what decorations you want and where you'd like to place them. Instead of trying to light your entire garden, focus in on two or three areas or objects, for example you may have a large trees or bushes that will serve as a focal point. Taking this approach will guarantee a successful project and will also prevent you from the mistake of having bought too many items you can not use for your Xmas display.
Stock Take
Once a sketch has been completed, now start a stock take of all the items you already have. Make sure that all your outdoor lights and displays to be in very good working order. Check for blown bulbs now is the time to replace them, as they may drain power from the entire string of lights and ultimately make the other bulbs look dimmer. Also, check for any broken cables, and don't forget to test your outdoor electrical points. If you can spot most problem's now you will be left with plenty of time to fix them before the official Xmas turning on ceremony.
Many Hands Make Light Work
Before you even get started with these tips, if you feel you need a little extra help with your outdoor decorating, why not call your friends and family and invite them around to help. Not only will it put all concerned in the Xmas spirit, but your decorating project is sure to be completed within a few hours, leaving you plenty of time to start your shopping list and too check it twice!
Tools Required
The tools required for this task may include the following:

Ladders
Ladders are one of the main causes of DIY accidents. Always erect your ladder in accordance with the manufacturer's written instructions. This advice on how to position ladders safely may make the difference in helping to save you from a nasty ladder accident at this time of year.
Ladder Types
There are many different types now available from small 'step stools' to larger stepladders and combination designs that can be converted into extending ladders also you may require a roof ladders for all roof work.

The most common type being used today is the 4 to 7 step folding version. These are ever versatile and most suited to this type of project, but it's very important never ever to use any stepladder that's the wrong height for this particular job of putting up outside Xmas decorations. Some ladders you may find to be just a little short for high work this can be just as dangerous as are too high for lower type jobs. You must be able to put up your decorations working comfortably without over reaching up, down or sideways on any type of ladder big or small. Never ever try to lean to one side as you could lose balance and be seriously injured.
Extension leads
Extension leads if yours is the type on a drum remember to remove all cable from the drum if not it may over heat when in use. If the lead is to trail along the ground make sure nobody can trip on it. Check you have the right fuse on the plug top off the extension lead may be a 5 amp or 13 amp electrical fuses.

Extension leads may be available in a green color, it will help blend in a lot easily with the trees and shrubs in your garden and may be available at your local DIY outlets.
