Ask The Doctor
Dear DIY Doctor I would like some of your excellent advice on the shower in my bedroom. The en-suite which the shower is installed in was here from day one but I am unable to use same as some of the tiles have fallen off. The tiles that have fallen off seem to be on a plasterboard wall which is also suffering from water damage.
Best Regards
Julie.
First things first Julie remove all exiting tiles from the damaged wall. Now remove all water damaged plasterboard from same.
I would the use of Plywood is this particular case. Fix 12mm exterior grade plywood to the damaged wall of the shower cubicle. Always make sure this is fixed to a firm timber stud or framework and seal it with a wood primer.
Unlike plasterboard and chipboard, the plywood wont distort if it gets wet, and because it is very stable, tiles stuck to it are unlikely to crack.
