Question: Sound Proofing
I live in an apartment with one common wall between myself and next door. My problem is that this wall does not seem to be very well insulated as I can hear very clearly all types of sounds coming through it. Have you any ideas about how to insulate this wall more so to reduce the sounds that travel through it?

Answer

Most partition walls are constructed with plasterboard which is fixed to both sides of a wooden stud frame. When sound waves hit one side of the wall it causes the plaster slab on that side to vibrate. Since the plasterboard is rigidly fixed to the wooden stud, the vibration is transmitted right through the studwork to the plasterboard on the other side. Those same vibrations traveling through the studwork can also channel noise throughout adjacent floors and ceilings. Noise will radiate easily through the structure because there's almost nothing there to cushion and absorb the sound waves.
Solution
One solution for sound control that produce fair to good results, is too pack the wall cavity with fiberglass insulation.
