Question: Plaster Cracks
Recently I have noticed cracks appearing in some of the plastered wall in my home can you please advise me on the the cause.

Answer

Depending on the type and age of the property crack can appear in the plaster work for varies reasons I will now outline.

Outline

Cracks in plaster work can be caused by the following settlement of the building, or maybe use of inferior materials or just bad workmanship. New building can be more prone too can suffer from movement, old building too for varies reasons can suffer from settlement and cause cracks to appear in the plaster work.

However most cracks are usually caused , by the plaster drying out too quickly, when plaster is applied to a dry wall which may then suck from the plaster the moisture required to enable it to correctly set. If the plaster is allowed to dry to fast either by the central heating or even the heat of the sun it can also show signs of cracking.
If the undercoat plaster is not allowed to dry completely and the topcoat of plaster is applied, the cracking in this case can be caused by unequal contraction.
