Let The Doctor Solve Your. Plumbing & Heating Dilemmas: This Week : “THE OSCARS” |
As I predicted in a previous article on raising energy cost the issue of energy world wide has now surfaced in Hollywood. In the new George Clooney film Syriana the complex business of energy is put under the microscope and of which George went home with an Oscar.
Spiraling Cost of Oil
If 2005 is anything to go by when we have seen the price of a barrel of oil spiral to above $ 60 a barrel. The price of oil will remain very volatile again, this year as the unrest in that part of the world is set to continue. If this current trend is to continue, you will see a return to the oil crisis of the early 1970s. I believe this year we will see what the economists call a “super spike” period which will drive oil prices to record levels.
The Industry's Call to Action?
As global energy costs continue to spiral, our industry must now work with government and all interested parties to produce a new White Paper on energy policy. This will provide the framework to address the energy problems we now face according to Kevin Farrelly Chairman of REGII (Registered Environmental Gas Installers of Ireland) and elected representative on the (IRP) Bord Gais installer review panel.
Public Awareness Campaign
Changing the general public attitude on cheap energy costs is now required. This can be achieved by means of a public awareness campaign. In theory the campaign will give home owners access to detailed information on energy efficient cost savings measures. Logic dictates that consumers will always go with a product that offers a good financial return.
What makes up a good central heating system?
Choosing the correct central heating system for your home is an important decision to make. Factors to consider are efficiency, controllability and most important running costs all of will have to be take into consideration. Another factor worth considering is the Eco-friendly effect the appliance will have on the environment. The promotion of energy efficiency will represent the main link between energy usage and the current Government environmental policy, the most effective method of reducing pollution is by means of much more energy efficiency.
A good central heating system will contain the most energy-efficient heating technologies available. This type of installation will cost more to install but in the long run it will save you money on your fuel bills.
Controls
Control your energy usage at the flick of a switch. Fitting automatic controls to your central heating system will cost you less if carried out when the installation is being installed. Controls being fitted at any time will make sound economic sense.
Condensing boilers are becoming increasingly popular because of their ultra-high efficiency, which will offer you savings on your annual fuel bill compared to ordinary boilers.
Boiler and thermostats wired in an interlock to prevent short-cycling when there is no demand for either hot water or room heating.
A room thermostat will allow you to select a comfortable temperature for your home. It works by monitoring the air temperature around it and automatically switching off or on your central heating system to maintain the comfort level you have selected. The room thermostat is ideally located in the hallway.
You may also fit thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) which allow more or less heat to enter the radiator depending on setting selected. Thermostatic radiator valves control the temperature of the room in which they are fitted. The thermostatic radiator valves switches off when the room temperature has been reached, and will come back on as temperature drops.
Time-clocks or electronic 7 day programmers will either switch your central heating system, on or off at the times you have pre-selected. The advantage of the 7 day programmers over a standard time clock it offers more flexibility a 7 day setting will allow for different weekend time control.
Tomorrow's World
As we all are only too aware of the dwindling energy resources available on the planet. The long term damage caused by the burning of fossil fuels is even evident in Antarctic where arctic predators are being killed off. The natural habitat of the polar bear is now under threat from the effect of global warming. The situation is now so serious that a law suite was filed by Green environmental groups suing the US government.
Green Is Good
The Natural Gas Industry's role is as custodian of the environment and this will be a significant step towards achieving our goal in reducing the level of CO2 emissions. We see this as only the start on the road to a more environmental friendly Ireland. The job of reducing greenhouse gasses is everybody's responsibility, we are all part of this project it is called the human race.
