| The DIY Evolution |
This is a brief summary of the evolution of the DIY revolution and
tracks it's path from humble begin to today's meteoric multi-million
phenomenon.
The Early Days
Way back in the early DIY days when the printed word was one of the
only forms of communication. About fifty years ago appeared the first
publication of the DIY magazine onto the shelves. Approximately
sixteen years later the BBC home service radio introduced its first
gardening series.
The 90s
The time was the mid 90s this was the start of the DIY home
improvement catalyst. The BBC offering was Home Front in 1994 and
Changing Rooms in 1996, the same year that Alan Titchmarsh took over
as main presenter of Gardeners World. This success was followed a year
later with Ground Force and the makeover craze was born. It was these
programmes that revolutionized the concept of DIY and gardening;
empowering all to take charge of their homes and to become actively
involved with the environment. The current boom is a direct result and
has served to revitalize the DIY retail sector and introduced
gardening and DIY home improvements to a much wider audience." Thank
god for the television another powerful revolution.
